A Treatise on Destiny: The First Slayer. For this week’s Open On Sunday’s drabble prompt, which was, a minor character. I went overboard; gee, there’s something different, huh? ~~~~~~ 1. In The Beginning It’s what you are called to do, they whisper as cold manacle fastens around her neck. Demon Killer. But she isn’t called for anything, she’s a simple girl a day’s journey from home, and they have stolen her to change her into something other than what she is. They want to make her a demon, a demon they can control, to do the killing they cannot do, to end the life of the blood-demons who hate the sun. This isn’t what she wants, but what she wants doesn’t matter to them. The darkness fills her, and she forgets what was. 2. Reproduction She dies, soon. The ones who follow her, who are filled with her spirit, who become, are as unprepared as she was, and she falls in battle a thousand times, only to be resurrected in another child, just as scared, just as controlled, and just as prone to fall. She tries to speak to them. They ignore her voice. She was the Demon Killer, but they are called Slayers, so they won’t see they are creatures of the shadows, that their power springs from a darkness they are not allowed to understand and incapable of controlling. The darkness that is her. 3. Ageing After the hundred thousandth Slayer falls, she enters a trance and stops trying to communicate. Begins to think that a quick, early death is the best gift she can offer these poor children. She animates them, but she no longer tries to teach them. There are ones who try to make it, who might be strong, but she has lost the ability to speak to them, to exercise her place in their minds and give them the wisdom she has acquired from a hundred thousand lifetimes. They are destined to die. It is what they are called to do. 4. Death. This one has done something unforgivable. She has turned away from what is as it is, has taken in something from outside to make herself stronger. It is not allowed. She cannot allow it, cannot allow her spirit to be broached as her body once was, and she awakens to teach this ungrateful thing the rules of being a Demon Killer, to show her that she is made to walk alone, with nothing but The Calling and the Spirit. But the abomination wins, and as she surrenders to her descendant, lets in the killing blow, she knows she was right; death is her gift. 01 May 2004
